Residents across our region are putting a high value on the security of our fresh water supply and consider it to be our most important natural resource.
That is the finding of a recent survey by Nanos Research that showed Canadians by a margin of 3-to-1, chose water over oil and gas as the key natural resource for Canadas future.
Pollster Nick Nanos tells Bayshore Broadcasting News 61.6 per cent of Canadians chose fresh water as the most important natural resource for the countrys future.
21 per cent of respondents chose oil and gas, 11 per cent chose forestry and 3 per cent chose the fisheries.
He says not only do Canadians view water as their most important natural resource, they also want governments to do more to protect it.
Nanos says the survey should be a wake up call for politicians at all levels to begin developing a nation wide water strategy so everyone is on the same page when it comes to managing this resource.
He says the survey also shows that Canadians want a national water strategy that forbids bulk water exports.
He goes on to say the poll shows that Canadians greatest concern regarding fresh water is pollution followed by waste and over consumption.
