The new Collingwood Library may not be finished yet, but it already has a name.
Council has decided the building on Ste. Marie Street will be known simply as the Public Library and Municpial Offices.
The first two floors will house the library and the third floor is for the town’s planning department offices since town hall is getting too crowded.
The first floor will be where you’ll find the main circulation desk, the children’s area and what’s being called Art Street where community artists will be featured.
The second floor will be for the geneology, reference and non-fiction sections and you’ll be able to look down to the first floor.
Fundraising and Public Relations Supervisor Chris Gough says the blue skin is now on the 10 thousand square foot building which is an impermiable vapour barrier.
Gough says this means the building is ready for bricking.
Gough and Site Supervisor with MJ Dixon, George Kernahan, both say despite delays because of an early winter and rain in the spring, construction is still on schedule for the October 29th grand opening.
Gough also says the library is still under budget.
The original price tag was 9 million, but tender came in at just over 7 million dollars and that’s before the sale of the current library on Second Street and other funding is factored in.
The library also features the first green roof in the area which will have small plants and flowers to help with storm water run off, and heating and cooling of the building.
Gough says there will be eco tours on the green roof and many environmentally conscious people will want to check it out because the library is striving for Gold LEEDs certification.
