Fairy Lake in Southampton will be aglow with special lanterns soon.
The 7th annual Lantern Festival put on by the Southampton Art School and Gallery, will be held today at 7 pm with a rain date of the next night.
Gallery manager Aly Boltman says it’s a night filled with music, artistic creativity and magic as the lake is outlined with these lanterns with hanging flashlights inside.
Boltman says they decided to go with small flashlights this year because they can be used over and over again.
In the past, glow sticks have been used and she says they’re a one-time use item and not very environmentally friendly as a result.
The festival begins at 7 with entertainment, followed by a lantern guided community brigade around Fairy Lake at dusk, led by a Scottish piper.
Plain or artist-decorated lanterns are for sale at the Southampton Art Gallery.
Lantern kits sell for seven dollars each.
Boltman says last year they had an estimated 400 people take part.
