There is a plan to create a neighbourhood watch in Chesley.
A number of residents have formed a committee to look into the idea and they will present their proposal to the community tonight.
A meeting is being held at 7 PM at the Klages Mill.
Arran Elderslie Councillor Stacy Charlton says the group wants to give residents a chance to provide input before they take their plan to Council.
Charlton — who lives in Chesley — likes the idea of a neighbourhood watch program and he feels the rest of Council will give it their blessing.
Charlton admits there is a problem with petty crimes in Chesley — most notably break and enters to businesses.
He says local merchants can not afford to be hit by thieves continuously.
But Charlton says it’s not any worse than other communities and he feels other communities should look at a neighbourhood watch.
Charlton is not talking about a vigilante group.
He says they will just have local residents patrol the streets at night to make sure everyone is safe and they can provide good information to the OPP.
