A former Toronto mayor is joining the fight against Site 41.
David Crombie says he has a cottage in Tiny, and he didn’t get involved in the dispute at first because he thought the right thing would be done.
He says the case needs a review, but he’s getting involved now because that hasn’t happened yet.
Crombie says that when the project was proposed 20 years ago, it was rejected by the Environmental Review Board, and the only reason it stayed on the public agenda was through a political act.
He says it doesn’t make sense that there hasn’t been a review, since the landfill wasn’t approved 20 years ago when standards were much lower than they are today.
Crombie says we’ve also learned a lot about our relationship with the environment over the past 20 years, in terms of waste management and protecting our water.
He says the landfill is flying in the face of all those environmental advances we’ve made over that time as well.
Crombie says one of the reason’s the landfill was rejected 20 years ago was because the site itself is simply impractical in relation to the importance of clean water.
He says they’ve tried to turn an unacceptable site into an acceptable site over the years, but Crombie says it really hasn’t worked.
Crombie is one of many speakers at the rally at 1:30 PM Saturday.
