Despite the cool summer, Southampton beaches will be on the minds of the Southampton Residents Association.
Association President Rod McLeod says they’re holding their annual meeting at 10 AM tomorrow at the Bruce County Museum and Cultural Centre in Southampton and all members and members-to-be are welcome.
McLeod says Saugeen Shores Mayor Mike Smith and the councillors representing Southampton ward are usually in attendance.
He says a lot of their focus will be on the beaches of Southampton and their conditions.
McLeod says many residents are concerned since the water testing of the beaches ended in 2008.
He says the association will urge the Mayor to go to the province and to the medical officer of health to re-instate the testing.
He says a beach hasn’t closed in Southampton but some have south of them and they don’t want to have that problem.
McLeod says they’ll talk to the mayor about the building sand dunes in the area as well.
He admits the dunes are needed to protect the beach, but they also obscure the view of the lake for beach front owners and it’s starting to be a problem.
McLeod figures the sanitary sewer project controversy will come up at tomorrow’s meeting.
However the association will likely not take a position on the merits of whether or not the sewers should go in.
He does say they will question the process by which the town notifies the residents and he hopes council will study the issue carefully before making any decision.
Tomorrow’s meeting should last about two hours.
