How to make improvements to a street in Tiverton created some debate on Kincardine council.
A sidewalk was installed on King Street North between Lois and Elizabeth Streets last year and now residents are upset about the lack of a curb along the street has led to water running from the road and onto their properties when it rains.
They would like the sidewalk replaced with a curb and gutter and have presented a petition to council stating their request and related concerns.
The public works committee recommended that work be done to repair the water damage — that would have cost 58 thousand dollars.
Deputy Mayor Laura Haight says it would make more sense to completely reconstruct the road instead of choosing a temporary solution.
Councillor Randy Roppel says the whole thing needs to be torn up and done right.
Councillor Gordon Campbell says the situation could simply be solved by adjusting the pavement so dip or swail could collect the water.
Councillor Kenneth Craig says a barrier also needs to be put in place for pedestrian safety.
Representatives of the Tiverton and District Ratepayers Association were present for the discussion.
They, along with Roppel, asked for assurance through an informal show of hands that the idea of completely reconstructing the street would be considered during the 2010 budget talks and received a positive response.
Roppel hopes that after a long discussion, council decides to put the issue to bed next year.
He says it doesn’t seem strange for the people to ask for assurance that the project will be considered.
Roppel says it’s only fair for them to ask if council will make a commitment, and they have agreed to make it.
