Quite the surprise for Tobermory’s Little Tub Bakery Owner Wayne Hadcock.
Hadcock tells Bayshore Broadcasting News he was woken up by a loud noise at about 12:30 AM on Friday.
He thought someone was breaking into his bakery downstairs and crept down to investigate.
That’s when he discovered the culprit was a black bear, sitting on his freezer and munching on chocolate mocha cookies.
Hadcock says he had forgotten to lock the big garage door at the front of the business the night before and the bear was able to shove it open.
He then smashed through the screen door and made straight for a package of cookies that had been left out.
Hadcock says he started yelling and waving his arms and the young bear took off.
When he called the Ministry of Natural Resources, they came and set up a trap outside the bakery, but the bear hasn’t been seen since.
Hadcock says the bear did about 200 dollars damage to his business, but because he’s an animal lover he says he has no hard feelings.
Hadcock adds he’s just glad nobody was hurt.
Hadcock says bear sightings have been happening more often since the MNR put up electric fencing around the Tobermory dump.
But he says he’s in favour of that plan, since it’s meant to get bears back on their natural diets instead of eating garbage.
