The environmental group Ecojustice points to Owen Sound as one of the communities that allows untreated sewage into Ontario’s waterways.
In its report released yesterday — Ecojustice says more than 11 million litres of untreated sewage was released into Georgian Bay in 2007.
That is an increase from 2006 when Owen Sound released 5.6 million litres of untreated sewage into the water.
Ecojustice — formerly the Sierra Legal Defence Fund — blames aging infrastructure and poor provincial oversight for the problem.
Report author Elaine Macdonald says the stinky situation needs more public attention and more investment from the province.
The problem is why the City just received 30 million dollars from the provincial and federal governments for upgrades to the wastewater treatment facility.
But that work is still 5 to 10 years from being complete.
