Residents near the Thornbury waste water treatment plant have been complaining about a foul odour.
Town officials hope they have solved the problem.
Deputy-Mayor Duncan McKinlay says the town had first received complaints from residents about four weeks ago.
The odour has come and gone, but was very noticeable in mid June.
McKinlay read a report from staff that said the odour came from the sewage lagoons when it was lowered as part of the regular maintenance program.
While the levels were still reduced, a load of septage from septic tanks was dumped into one of the lagoons.
McKinlay says staff are continuing to monitor the situation and are delivering information letters to nearby residents.
McKinlay says most septage is processed at the Craigleith sewage treatment plant and loads have been accepted at the Thornbuy plant only occasionally.
He adds septage will no longer be accepted at the Thornbury Plant.
