A wildly successful 150th anniversary celebration for Southampton.
The event held last August yielded a surplus of 73 thousand dollars, and the committee has plans for putting it to use.
Funds will be donated to the Streetscape Committee for two new heritage-look streetlights on High Street.
The rest of the money will go towards possible renovations at the town hall.
Committee Treasurer Tim Andersen says the vast number of events that took place during the celebrations and the enthusiasm of Southampton residents for the town and its history are what made the anniversary so successful.
He says as soon as people knew about the celebrations, former residents came back, and even people who don’t live in Southampton got involved.
Andersen says people from other areas of Bruce County attended, and believes the celebrations struck a chord with the community.
The 150th anniversary celebrations in Southampton received a grant from the Department of Canadian Heritage.
Almost all of the souvenirs and history books produced for the occasion sold out and a series of historical plaques have been installed at locations around town.
Bruce County Tourism estimates the celebrations contributed over 1.8 million dollars to the area economy.
