Attempts are being made to make a crossing near Gateway Haven in Wiarton safer.
The Bruce County Highways Committee has agreed to allow the department to install flashing pedestrian signals on Frank Street leading to the crossing.
Highways Engineer Brian Knox says there is concern about the safety aspects because it takes longer for elderly people to cross a road and the crossing is situated near a large curve to the east.
He says there are currently no sidewalks that connect the crossing and are working with the Town of South Bruce Peninsula to help facilitate that.
Knox says another issue is the speed limit of the road where the road at the crossing is set at 50 kilometres an hour.
But the road coming in from the east is at 80 kilometres an hour.
He says that poses an opportunity for the odd driver to drive around the curve at high speeds going into the crossing not realizing the change in speed limits.
Knox says there is some preparation that needs to be done in conjunction with the Town and the public before work can begin.
He says to try and make the public aware of what they are doing in finding a suitable location for the signals.
No word as to how the cost of the signals will be covered.
