The federal Liberals will announce today whether they will support the Harper government’s latest economic report card — and a thumbs down could trigger an election.
Simcoe Grey MP Helena Guergis doesn’t think they should head to the polls anytime soon.
The local Conservative MP is convinced voters are not interested in a summer election.
Guergis says voters have told her they’re worried an election campaign could hurt Canada’s progress in recovering from the economic recession.
Guergis criticized the NDP and the Bloc for making up their minds before reading the latest economic report card.
It’s been only nine months since Canadians last voted, in October 2008 — re-electing the Conservatives with a second-straight minority government.
If the government falls next Friday, the election would probably take place in late July.
That would be the fourth federal general election in just over five years.
The Conservatives hold 143 seats in Parliament, while the combined opposition parties fill 161 seats. There is one independent.
All three opposition parties would have to vote together to defeat the government.
