A local soldier is receiving recognition from the Town of South Bruce Peninsula and members of Parliament.
Corporal Dustin Lowery recently returned home from his first tour of duty — and the Council presented the 21 year-old with a scroll of recognition at last night’s meeting.
Lowery, of Park Head returned home from a seven and a half month tour of duty in Afghanistan last month.
Mayor Gwen Gilbert says it was councils opportunity to thank Lowery for what he has done for Canada.
Gilbert also presented Lowery with another scroll of recognition from Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound MP Larry Miller and read a letter of appreciation from MPP Bill Murdoch.
Lowery says he has always wanted to join the Canadian Armed Forces and travel the world.
He says he began his basic military training in Meaford in 2005 and then went on to the Canadian Forces Base in Petawawa where he started pre-training for Afghanistan.
Lowery describes his tour as very hot, cold and dusty.
He says the temperature reached 47 degrees Celsius in the summer months and dropped to minus 8 degrees Celsius in winter months.
Lowery says he did witness some casualties but did not lose any close friends or members of his immediate platoon during his tour.
Lowery says he will continue his military training and will eventually go on to complete his leadership course.
