A permanent home for the Paisley Farmer’s Market is in the works.
Arran-Elderslie Council has passed a motion to let the market use space behind the arena this year.
Market organizers had wanted to use the Town Square area near the legion this year but were not allowed to.
Recently — the market took place in the yard of one organizers home — leading to strongly worded complaints from nearby residents about traffic congestion.
Councillor Mark Davis hopes the market is ultimately successful at its new location, and builds on the success farmer’s markets have had in other communities.
Davis however would like to see a letter from the Paisley Chamber of Commerce showing support or opposition to the market.
Market organizer Sandra Blodgett says it is often difficult for the chamber to gather enough members to have a quorum in order to make decisions.
Davis says he’d still like to see a letter, and that the quorum issue isn’t something council has the ability to deal with.
Davis is concerned about opposition from the owners of local stores who would be competing with the farmer’s market for customers.
He says the chamber should still meet and express its support or opposition because it would help council feel more secure in its decision.
Organizers had wanted to have the market at the front of the arena, but council would not allow it.
