If you’ve been downtown in Port Elgin or Southampton, you may have noticed something different.
The streets are lined with blue and yellow ribbons reminding everyone that the first ever Saugeen Shores Relay for Life for cancer research is nearing.
One of the organizers Trish Bernard says the ribbons were put up by grade eight students from Saugeen Central school in Port Elgin and G.C Huston school in Southampton.
Bernard says it’s part of their promotion of the June 26th event at Saugeen District Secondary School.
Another organizer Nancy MacLeod says they hoped for 50 teams to take part in this first effort.
They have at least 52 and over 24 thousand dollars already collected in on line pledges.
This Relay for Life, like others in the region will have a very emotional Cancer Survivor’s lap.
One of those survivors is former Saugeen Shores Fire Chief Bruce Fenton.
He says it takes a team to put this event on and it takes a team to treat cancer patients such as himself.
Fenton says it’s been 13th months since his colorectal cancer surgery and he feels fortunate to be one of the survivors.
The Relay for Life will go Friday, June 26th at SDSS from 7 PM to 7 AM.
If the weather is inclement, the event will move indoors at the school.
