The official end of a long battle for veterans in Huron and Bruce Counties will be marked in Goderich tomorrow morning.
President of Legion Branch 109 in Goderich, June Pyette says an open-air ceremony will be held to formally dedicate a section of Highway 21 between Goderich and Kincardine known as the Veterans’ Memorial Highway.
Pyette says the event will be held at Little Dutch Park beside the Tourist Booth on Victoria Street and will feature a parade and remarks from the Dominion Vice-President of the Legion.
Pyette says the parade and dedication is an event for everyone.
She says she hopes not only veterans but soldiers on active service will witness the dedication which will also be attended by military Cadets.
The parade will start at 10:30 AM Saturday.
Pyette says she hopes officials from the Transportation Ministry will be there.
Pyette says MTO officials attended a function at the Goderich Legion in February shortly after the naming of the highway was approved by the province.
Pyette says Mayor Deb Shewfelt will be at tomorrow’s ceremony.
Goderich Legion members had the backing of their comrades in Kincardine during the drive to dedicate the highway.
Pyette says tomorrow was chosen as a special day to mark the dedication, because it’s the 65th anniversary of D-Day on which Canadian, British and American forces stormed the beaches of Normandy marking the start of the liberation of Nazi-occupied Western Europe.
