The Federal government says recently announced funding for low-income seniors will arrive the week of July 6th.
It will mean up to $900 for single seniors and $1,500 for couples.
To date, 2.2 million Canadians receive old age security and the guaranteed income supplement. The money comes from top ups to these two funds recently. the government is fast tracking payments to help seniors weather the virus’s storm.
By way of example, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says many seniors haven’t been able to shop or take public transit for instance, and have had to rely on deliveries, which incurs extra costs.
“This Covid crisis is tough on seniors and that’s why these additional funds will make a difference,” he said.
The PM adds that the pandemic is the new normal for many low-income seniors and that this and more funds coming for the United Way and the Red Cross will increase food security for them too.
