Plans to expand the Hanover/Walkerton landfill is on to the next step.
Brockton Council has passed a motion — accepting comments from a public meeting held in February that will allow for the Consultant Project Team to prepare the Environmental Assessment report.
Councillor Charlie Reidl says the biggest thing about the passage of the motion is that Council is willing to allow for the height of the expanded landfill to be same as the existing one.
He says the original engineering design saw the height of landfill be 10 feet shorter than the old one.
Reidl — who sits on the joint landfill committee — says Council will be voting on changing the zoning by-law to permit a landfill use since the municipally-owned land is currently zoned as agricultural.
Reidl says if all goes well they should have their final plan together for submission to the Ministry of the Environment in October.
Reidl estimates that the current landfill will reach its capacity by 2011.
