The Grey Bruce Health Unit no longer wants to hear about dead birds in your yard.
The monitoring system has been in place since 2002 as a way for officials to guage whether West Nile Virus was prevelant in the region.
The health unit would then plan activities and programs accordingly.
Now, health unit officials say it appears as if West Nile Virus is here to stay and it’s no longer necessary to monitor dead birds for the disease.
It doesn’t mean an end to West Nile prevention programs — just the closure of the monitoring system.
We’re still reminded to take precautions against getting bitten by mosquitoes — including the use of insect repellent, the wearing of long sleeves and pants and property owners making sure they get rid of standing water.
