The water-filled hole at the corners of Hume and Hurontario streets in Collingwood is being drained, but there’s still no re-start date for the Admiral Collingwood Place project.
Developer Steve Assaff says he’s as frustrated as anyone at the big hole in the ground where a building should be.
The plan was to have stores on the ground floor and residential condos on several storeys above.
The project was put on hold in the fall when the recession began.
Last week, construction hoardings around the site were pulled down and replaced with chain-link fencing, revealing the water-filled hole.
Assaff says the hoardings were only designed to be up for 18 months, not three years.
Construction started last fall after years of delays.
The original project was approved by a previous town council in spite its being too tall for the town’s heritage guidelines.
The Council elected in 2006 revoked the approvals.
A re-design was approved in advance of an OMB hearing slated for two years ago.
Assaff says he doesn’t know when work on the building will resume.
He says it will take an increase in confidence in the economy to get shovels back in the ground.
