The station has been recognized for its cultural significance.
The Town of South Bruce Peninsula Council passed a by-law at last night’s meeting to designate the Wiarton Train Station as a building of architectural, cultural and historic heritage value.
The building which was built in 1904 by the Grand Trunk Railway is now located in Bluewater Park.
Mayor Gwen Gilbert says it was the desire of the Heritage Committee to have the building designated – so no major changes can be made to it.
Gilbert says they thought it was important to have the station around for children to learn about and enjoy.
She says this is the first step in council’s initiative to start taking heritage seriously.
The station was originally built on George Street and was moved to Bluewater Park in the early 70’s.
Gilbert says there have been renovations done in the last few years with funds from the Ontario Government – but most of the original work is still in tact.
She says the original vaulted and geometrically patterned ceilings, floors and furniture remain in the station.
The station is now used as a tourist information booth and craft area.
