It was a golden opportunity to celebrate a golden anniversary.
The Saugeen Shores Chamber of Commerce held it’s annual meeting on Friday night and celebrated 50 years of serving the local business community.
The chamber was created when the former organizations serving Port Elgin and Southampton were merged.
President Gary Brown says the Saugeen Shores chamber has excellent people, from office staff, right through to the members themselves.
Mayor Mike Smith gave an update on the municipality’s priorities for this year. He says from a community and council perspective, he always enjoys working with the Chamber of Commerce.
He believes they always follow through with their plans and that makes it easy to support them.
Kent Milroy was President of the Chamber of Commerce in the mid 1970’s.
He says the business community has expanded tremendously since that time, along with the population of the area.
He credits location and what the community has to offer as the reasons for the growth.
The Saugeen Shores Chamber of Commerce has 392 members and along with representing local business interests, stages various community events, including parades and cruise nights.
The chamber also operates the MTO licence office in Port Elgin.
