The Canadian Cancer Society has officially launched the run-up to the first ever Relay for Life event in Saugeen Shores on June 26th.
Event Co-Chair Trish Bernard says Saturday’s kickoff at Saugeen District Secondary School saw some cancer survivors sign and more teams sign up.
Bernard says 44 teams have signed up so far, with 278 participants. She says they have already raised 14 thousand dollars from on-line donations.
Bernard says on the night of June 26th, while teams continually walk around the SDSS track until dawn, bands will be playing, there will be a tug of war, and games.
Bernard says the luminary ceremony will happen at dusk. Luminaries are small candles placed along the track that can be purchased in memory of loved ones who have battled cancer.
Bernard says anyone who wants to take part in relay for life as a volunteer or sign up a team can contact her at 519-832-9192, or Registration Committee Members Pam Inkster at 519-832-9270, and Bonnie Charlton at 519-797-1316.
Bernard says for the first ever Relay for Life in Saugeen Shores, a goal was set to have 50 teams and raise 100 thousand dollars. 44 teams have already signed up.
All proceeds from Relay for Life go towards cancer research, prevention, and assisting people who have cancer in Grey Bruce.
The Relay for Life runs all night on June 26th at Saugeen District Secondary School in Port Elgin.
