Owen Sound is getting money for the next phase of upgrades to its wastewater system.
Bruce Grey Owen Sound M-P Larry Miller, Huron Bruce M-P-P Carol Mitchell, Owen Sound Mayor Ruth Lovell Stanners, members of Council and staff were at the site of the Owen Sound Waste Water Treatment Plant yesterday for a COMRIF funding announcement.
Both the federal and provincial governments are contributing 1.1 million dollars each with the City covering the balance of the 6.5 million dollar cost of the project.
Lovell Stanners says the second phase of the project will make the plant more effective and reduce anything that could end up in Georgian Bay.
She says the City takes stewardship of the Bay very seriously.
Lovell Stanners says the City has been continuing to work on bringing improvements to the plant.
She says there will be a time where they will soon have to replace the entire plant itself.
Director of Operations John Johnston says the next phase of the upgrades — which is currently under an environmental assessment — will be in the 40 to 50 million dollar range.
He says it is important to have both the federal and provincial governments step up to the plate as the City alone won’t be able to handle the project by itself.
He says yesterday’s announcement is a good sign that all levels of government can work together on important infrastructure projects.
Wellington Construction of Palmerston is currently doing the work and it is expected to be completed by September of 2010.
