The construction of the three million dollar addition to St. Mary’s High School in Owen Sound is wrapping up.
Superintendent of Business Cathy Colton says the project should be complete in the next few weeks.
It includes six new classrooms, an art room, family studies room, physics and chemistry labs, washrooms and some storage space.
This project will replace the old 1891 portion of the school which the School Board hopes to demolish soon.
The City of Owen Sound however has taken steps to have the old portion of the school deemed a ‘Heritage Building’.
Colton disagrees with the City, saying engineer documents clearly state that the old portion of the school is prohibitive to repair.
She says they could spend millions of dollars on the aging portion of the school and still not successful extend its life due to an erosion problem which is causing the foundation to shift.
A Conservation Review Board Hearing will be held in June to determine the fate of the old portion of St. Mary’s High School.
