The owner of Hi-Berry Farm in Saugeen Shores is pleased that a major source of his labour will still be available.
Fruit and vegetable farmer Luke Charbonneau says 15 thousand Mexican migrant workers come to Canada each year and his industry wouldn’t be able to function without them.
He’s pleased the federal government is doing its best to keep the country open to Mexican workers as long as they are healthy.
New measures state that Mexican workers will have to be examined by two doctors and complete a questionnaire before they are allowed to leave for work in Canada.
Charbonneau says he already has 10 workers from Mexico at his farm now who are healthy and is hoping 12 more are able to come in June.
He says it wouldn’t do any good to have workers here who are sick and that it wouldn’t be good for the local community or their employers.
Charbonneau says he’d prefer that workers who are ill stay in Mexico with their families and get better.
He adds that for people suffering from illness, travelling wouldn’t be good for them, or the people here.
