A job had to be done and Corporal Cameron Bruce, a reservist with the Grey and Simcoe Forresters stepped up to the plate to get it done.
Bruce says his seven month tour of duty in Afghanistan was something he volunteered for and may do so again in a year or so.
The 19 year old native of Port Elgin returned home from active duty recently no worse the wear for his experiences.
Bruce says he volunteered because he wanted to serve Canada but he also wanted to experience what very few people get to see and he wanted to help.
He says his job was prime security for the Construction Management Organization which helps the locals in Afghanistan re-build their lives.
Bruce says he was part of team that was constructing an irrigation canal with the local workers.
He said they were “outside the wire” meaning outside the confines of home base and they had to be on alert at all times in case of attack.
Bruce says he’s glad to be back and may take some time now to return to school before deciding any future with the military.
But he urges all Canadians to continue to support the military both overseas and in Canada.
Bruce says “it’s really awesome” having the support of Canadians as you go about doing the job for which they were trained.
