Kincardine Council is trying to calm the controversy surrounding what kind of beer ends up being served at this summer’s Tiverton Old Boys and Girls Reunion.
Management at locally-based Steelback Brewery have been upset after reunion organizers stated they might chose to use only canned beer for the event.
That would shut Steelback out because it only makes bottled and draught beer.
Mayor Larry Kraemer emphasizes no decision has been made yet.
He says no tender has been approved and the reunion committee will call for tenders and then suggest to council which one should be approved.
Kraemer says following the process will ensure fairness to not only Steelback, but any other brewery that might be interested.
The reunion is being organized by a municipal committee, and Kraemer wants the municipal tender policy to be followed closely during the process.
Councillor Randy Roppel — who chairs the reunion committee — says the policy will be followed.
He says when quotes from breweries come in, the committee will look at them and then make a recommendation to council for final approval.
On the subject of beer cans, Roppel feels they would be a good option because they involve less fuss.
Councillor Marsha Leggett is concerned the controversy has been based on hearsay and not actual facts.
