Meaford town councillors got an earful from some ratepayers, about plans to expand the bag tag system.
Council held two public meetings last week to get feedback on the proposed budget.
35 people showed up for the first meeting, with another 25 out last Thursday for the second meeting.
One big bone of contention is the move to charge 2 dollars for each bag of garbage put out to the curb in Meaford.
Currently, the first bag is free.
Meaford Mayor Francis Richardson estimates the change would generate about 350 to 360 thousand dollars a year for the town.
Several residents also complained that the size of the town staff has grown too rapidly, and Richardson says a full review is underway.
At this point, Meaford taxpayers are looking at an overall blended tax increase of 5 per cent for this year.
That is municipal, county and school tax combined.
Mayor Richardson says the budget aims to pay off accumulated debt that the town faces, and also rebuild the reserve fund.
Richardson says the budget should be finalized at the council meeting on April 20th.
