Historic buildings in Hanover now have a powerful ally.
At the request of some town residents, Hanover has formed a Municipal Heritage Committee.
Mayor Kathi Maskell says it’s a first for Hanover.
She says unlike most municipalities, Hanover’s Heritage Committee was not born out of desire to save a specific building.
She says it was created out of desire to celebrate the heritage of the community.
Maskell says this new Municipal Heritage Committee has been in planning stages for two years and is pleased it is finally formed.
It’s hoped this milestone will help attract tourism to town as well as boost economic development.
Maskell says the new committee — made up of residents and councilors — will also serve as a resource to the town to help identify and protect what is important to Hanover residents.
The Heritage Committee is currently identifying a list of special projects.
These projects not only include heritage properties but also important stories about Hanover that need to be preserved.
Maskell says it’s important that these memories are cherished and not forgotten, stirring up civic pride and providing youth with a strong foundation to grow upon.
