Grey County will continue to elect its Warden each year.
Council was split as they discussed the merits of having future Wardens serve a two-year term at Tuesday’s meeting in Owen Sound.
Those like Councillor and Georgian Bluffs Mayor Alan Barfoot feel that a 1-year term enables Council to re-evaluate and make a change if they don’t believe the current Warden is doing the job.
Warden Kevin Eccles brought forth the idea of a 2-year term as a way to bring stability and consistency from the head of Council and to allow for an easier transition.
In the end, the decision to keep the status quo was carried by a vote of 10-8.
Eccles says everyone understood the pros of having the Warden serve a 2-year term.
But he says there was some sense from Council of losing some of the power to put someone new in that position.
Eccles cites himself and Past Warden Bob Pringle — the Deputy Mayor of Chatsworth — as examples that Council will let you stay on as Warden as long as you are doing the job well.
Council also decided to maintain four other parts from the review.
Council will continue to be made up of the elected Mayor and Deputy Mayor from each of the 9 municipalities instead of having seperate elections for upper and lower tiers.
The election of Warden will continue to be done by members of Council.
The County will also maintain the number of members on Council to 18 and to keep the weighted voting system.
