Olympic fever may soon hit schools across Grey and Bruce Counties.
Students across the region are being encouraged to go on-line and apply to become one of the ‘runners’ who will carry the Olympic torch when it comes through the region in December.
Brockton Education Olympic Committee Co-chair Bill King calls it a great opportunity for students to get inspired and participate in a historical event.
Time however is of the essence, King says there is only about a month left to apply.
Ten torch bearers will be randomly selected for each of the Grey Bruce communities the torch will visit.
Participants must be at least 13 years of age and be able to carry the torch for about 300 meters.
Anyone can apply.
King hopes the Torch Relay will spark Canadian pride and passion amongst the youth as Canada prepares to host the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.
Local schools are also be encouraged to build up anticipation for the arrival of the flame by hosting a week of Olympic related activities prior to the event.
King adds that Walkerton native and two time Olympic Rowing Bronze Medallist Laryssa Biesenthal will be a part of the celebrations when the torch comes through Walkerton on the December 28th.
To become a torch bearer students can apply on-line at
