Kincardine Council has renewed it’s insurance policy for municipal property, liability, and accident insurance for municipal volunteers.
The cost is over 208 thousand dollars.
The approval didn’t come without controversy, not because of the cost, but because of the timing of the renewal.
Treasurer Brenda French told council the previous policy had actually expired on April 1st, the day the renewal was to be approved.
But the insurance company agreed to hold the policy open for another week so the decision could pass through Committee of the Whole and be approved by regular council.
Councillor Ron Hewitt says he doesn’t get “a real warm fuzzy” when an insurance policy is verbally agreed to.
Councillor Randy Roppel realizes insurance is required for the municipality but it seems the renewal is done at the last minute every year.
He says if council is going to deal with a serious issue like insurance, more time should be given for discussion.
Roppel says councillors likely have questions about the municipal insurance policy and having very little time to go through the renewal process doesn’t give them a lot of time to have them answered.
