Work on the next phase of the multi million dollar Big Dig in downtown Mount Forest is underway.
Public Works Manager Gary Williamson says the signage went up Tuesday — alerting residents that the next block of Main Street from Wellington to Birmingham will be closed to traffic completely.
He says they’ll be replacing everything along that stretch from water and sewer mains to pavement and sidewalks.
Williamson says they’ll also be finishing up work they started last year on the two blocks further up with tree planting, benches, garbage cans and new curbs.
That means local traffic only along the stretch from Wellington to Highway 89.
He figures much of the work will be done and the road re opened by mid June, weather permitting.
That’s good news to local merchants and residents alike who’ve had to deal with the traffic headache as well as the street closure in front of businesses.
Williamson says they’ll once again be making arrangements for access to the backs of the stores affected.
But he wants to re-iterate that every shop on Main Street is open for business.
He figures all the downtown work will be completed in time for their annual Fire Works Festival in July.
