The Mayor of Saugeen Shores hopes some of the infrastructure money announced in the recent provincial budget will end up helping the town.
Mike Smith says it could be used for the installation of new sewers north of the Saugeen River in Southampton.
The town has already committed money for environmental assessment work on the project.
Smith says the province is going to match funding from the federal government and believes Saugeen Shores will find out early this summer how much it will be getting when the next round of Building Canada funding announcements are made.
The mayor says after the recent municipal budget process, he knows lots of infrastructure work needs to be done and hopes some of the provincial money will be there.
He says another item in the budget affecting municipalities is new standards for public sector accounting and asset management.
On the issue of harmonizing the GST and PST, Smith says he can understand why business owners would want to blend the taxes together.
He says it hopefully reduces the workload but understand nobody likes paying extra taxes.
Smith says there will be a number of exemptions to the new tax and the province will be providing a grant to people during the first year it is in effect.
He says the blended sales tax will affect municipalities, which currently don’t pay GST.
Smith also wonders how the town’s yearly costs for gasoline and heating will be affected, because they are currently exempt from the PST.
