A fundraiser in support of Families of Spinal Muscular Atrophy Canada is being held at the Durham Legion tonight.
Christina McDonald’s 9 year old daughter Natalie has Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), which causes muscles to become weak, and has left Natalie in a wheelchair.
McDonald says 50 per cent of children diagnosed with SMA will die before their second birthday, but she knows some people in their 30s and 40s.
She says it all depends on the type and strength level of SMA.
McDonald says every year, they pick a cause or foundation that has helped the family or done something for Natalie.
She explains SMA is a rare genetic disease and when Natalie was diagnosed, the family didn’t know anything about it.
McDonald says they found Families of Spinal Muscular Atrophy Canada online and the group provided them with information and put them in touch with other families.
McDonald says she’s now been able to help out others in turn.
The 2nd Annual ‘Kiss for the Cause’ Frosty Fundraiser goes tonight from 8 PM to 1 AM at the Durham Legion.
The event includes food, dancing, raffle prizes, and a silent auction.
Tickets are 8 dollars in advance or 10 dollars at the door.
