Collingwood’s mayor says there is more than just bad news about the economy.
In fact, Chris Carrier says he’s hearing more good economic news than bad in Collingwood.
He says the bad news is getting more coverage though, because there have been many jobs lost across the country in the past 4 months.
Carrier has been making corporate calls on a number of businesses in the community.
He says automotive related companies are making decisions so that when they come out of the recession they will be well positioned to recall employees who were laid off, and be in a hiring mode as well.
And Carrier says the conversations he’s had with businesses are optimistic about coming out of the recession in good shape.
He says many of the businesses that are civil engineering related are hiring, and they are significant employers in the community.
Another area Carrier says is doing quite well are public service jobs, such as schools and hospitals.
He adds some of the specialized manufacturers are doing well and hiring too, and are quietly looking for employees.
Carrier says that Barber Glass in Collingwood is a great example.
He says they have made decisions in the past that allowed them to expand during the slowdown.
Barber Glass is getting ready to send out their first shipment of product soon.
Carrier says people just need to remember that it’s not all doom and gloom, and there are lots of good stories out there.
