More cuts are coming to the proposed budget in Meaford, as council tries to get the tax increase this year below 8 per cent.
Initially, town staff presented council with an 18 per cent hike in operating costs but Mayor Francis Richardson says a second run at the numbers got them down to about 11 per cent.
Richardson says that’s not good enough and he wants to see an increase of 8 per cent or less for homeowners.
Deputy Mayor Mike Traynor came to the recent budget meeting armed with a list of proposals where Meaford could save money.
Mayor Richardson says not everything could likely be done, including renegotiating some contracts — but Staff will look at the ideas.
At this point, he isn’t sure when council will take another run at the budget numbers.
Meaford council is meeting tonight and a report is expected at the meeting on how long staff will need to work on the ideas.
