It may not get quite the attention that Hockeyville brings but one community is willing to settle for Hometown Hockey Spirit winner.
Hanover was named one of the ten finalists in the OMHA Hometown Hockey Spirit Contest for 2008.
The Town was selected for their recent Hockey Day in Hanover event.
Steve Fitzsimmons — a board member with Hanover Minor Hockey — says it is great to be mentioned as a top ten finalist.
He says there other finalists that are in much larger centres than Hanover.
He says he likes his chances to win but feels they are winners no matter what the outcome.
Fitzsimmons credits Nikki Freiburger for putting together the presentation that was forwarded to the Ontario Minor Hockey Association.
Fitzsimmons says they had quite a number of volunteers from their minor hockey organizations who helped out with Hockey Day in Hanover.
He says it was a highly successful event with all of their minor hockey teams participating.
He says a 10-foot wooden hockey monument was there as well as Cubby from the Owen Sound Attack.
Fitzsimmons says the OMHA will announce the winner no later than May 1st, 2009 and the first prize is a 75 hundred dollar OMHA credit that can be used towards player and coaching clinics.
He says these clinics help train coaches and help players with their on-ice skills including power skating, stick handling, and body checking.
He says these clinics cost money and instead of having to pay to send these people to these clinics they can use the credits to have one in Hanover.
Fitzsimmons says the first place winner also gets a Maple Lodge Farms barbecue for up to 5 thousand people, 500 passes to the Hockey Hall of Fame, and an appearance from a member of the NHL Alumni Association.
There are also prizes for the second and third place finisher that will be picked at random.
Hanover will be going up against Ajax, Bancroft, Barrie, Caledonia, East Gwillimbury, Oakville, New Tecumseth, Windsor, and Woolwich.
