The wrecking ball will be visiting the historic church at Mennonite Corners in a matter of a few days.
Council has decided to replace the 200 year old church with a plaque.
Georgian Bluffs council put forward a motion at last night’s meeting to demolish the historic church and mount a memorial plaque in its place.
The motion was carried 6-1.
Mayor Alan Barfoot says this was one of the toughest decisions council has made but the building is beyond the point of reconstruction.
Barfoot says council has been dealing with this issues for years.
He says they received legal advise on the matter and council was advised they could decide what was to be done with the building.
Chair of Heritage Georgian Bluffs, John Harrison says he is not entirely surprised at their decision, but is disappointed.
Harrison says he believes the decision is based on the councillors personal opinions.
He says the committee brought in a heritage architect expert who deemed the building as savable.
Harrison says council is flying in the face of expert opinion and believes it is irresponsible and highly regrettable.
He says now the committee is reduced to having a cartoon in place of the Church, located at the intersection of Grey County Roads 18 and 5.
Work between Heritage Georgian Bluffs and Council on the future of the Church has been ongoing since 2005 and none of the required conditions have been met within the outlined time frame.
Barfoot says they will hear input from area residents as to what will be put on the plaque before it is erected.
