The O-p-p is concerned with the increase in fatal snowmobile incidents so far this season.
The number of deaths investigated this winter has hit 17 from last year’s high of 13.
Most upsetting for the O-p-p is the fact that in almost every case..either alcohol or excessive speed has played a direct role.
Grey County O-p-p Constable Steve Starr says that’s the frustrating part…these accidents were preventable.
The O-p-p are calling on communities to play a role in ensuring the safety of snowmobile operators.
They say most of the crashes happened when the operator was with someone else and that means some of us are condoning the risky behaviour on the trails.
Constable Starr admits the majority of snowmobile operators are responsible…especially in this region where reported incidents are minimal.
Starr says soft ice conditions are also a concern this time of year when the weather starts warming up.
The only snowmachine fatality in Grey County this year happened in December near Balmy Beach.
