Police want the public to be aware of scams especially during this recession.
Owen Sound Police Chief Tom Kaye raised the issue at this week’s Police Services Board meeting.
Kaye says the community is made up of seniors who rely on their investment portfolio for their retirement income.
He says with the downturn in the economy people have lost a lot money through their investments and there are people who are looking to take advantage of it and make the situation worse.
Kaye says people who have lost money are desperate to find something that would save the day financially.
He says they answer an email offering promises but end up falling for a scam and they really need to be vigilant of it.
Kaye also brought up so-called bank inspectors who call people at random and ask them for help in an investigation.
He says they usually instruct them to withdrawal money and bring it to the inspector who is situated somewhere outside of the bank branch.
He says if there is a problem with a bank, it would be handled by the local branch along with police.
He says a bank would never have anyone from out of town call a customer, ask them to withdrawal money, and then bring the cash to them.
