The Ontario SPCA is putting out a call for people to adopt 100 dogs recently rescued from a suspected puppy mill in Grey County.
Bayshore Broadcasting News has learned the suspected property was in the Meaford area.
Criminal charges are pending against two residents — and if convicted, they face a two year jail term and a lifetime ban from owning animals.
OSPCA spokesperson Kristin Williams says dogs of various small breeds were seized on December 1st.
Williams says the farm they were at was filthy and didn’t provide proper ventilation for the puppies.
She adds many dogs were covered in their own waste, and hadn’t been fed well.
In fact — Williams says their officers head to leave the property frequently due to the ammonia in the air.
Williams says they were not able to save all of the dogs — she notes a number had to be humanely euthanized due to cancerous tumours and disease.
There are about 100 dogs available for adoption at the Kitchener-Waterloo Humane Society, Lincoln County Humane Society and Ontario S-P-C-A York Region Branch.
Williams says the dogs — including Bichons, Pekingese, Papillons and Lhasa Apso types — have received medical treatment and have recovered.
