New federal tax breaks for home renovations are getting a lot of homeowners thinking about doing some work on their houses this year.
The Chair of the Ontario Home Builder’s Association Renovator’s Council recently explained on Sounding Board that homeowners need to be careful when they’re selecting a contractor to do the work.
Michael Martin says the best way to find a reputable renovator is to check with the local chapter of the Home Builder’s Association.
Martin says it’s absolutely necessary to have a written contract for the work being done instead of just paying cash under the table.
He says homeowners who don’t have a contract often end up running into problems.
Martin adds written contracts with licensed contractors are necessary anyway, in order to be eligible for the new federal programs.
He says it’s absolutely necessary for the required building permits to be purchased for electrical, plumbing, and carpentry work being done on a home.
Other advice for selecting the right building contractor include researching the history of the company, checking references, and avoiding door-to-door salespeople.
