The Aboriginal Resource Centre is now open at Georgian College in Owen Sound.
Kathy Marsden, Native Education Officer from the Barrie campus says the centre provides a number of services for both aboriginal students and the general student population.
She says they offer everything from counselling and peer mentoring programs to spiritual guidance and teaching circles.
Marsden says they’re finding that the centre helps students who may not only be very far from home…but also from their aboriginal culture.
Right now she says they don’t have any hard stats on what role these kinds of centres play in the success of aboriginals in post secondary education but she says the feedback has been very positive.
Today’s official opening ceremony included traditional native food as well as dancers from Saugeen First Nation and drummers from Cape Croker.
