A proposal to rename a section of Campbell Avenue as McGaw Drive in Kincardine isn’t going over well with residents.
15 of them showed up at a recent council meeting to speak against the plan, which staff believe would make it easier for emergency crews responding to calls in the area.
Jim Weir, President of a company that owns a nearby housing complex, says changing the name will be a nuisance and upsetting to many tenants in his facility.
He says newly installed signage at his complex will have to be replaced.
Residents Larry Monroe, and Nick Toth also spoke against changing the name.
Councillor Mike Leggett says the simplest thing would be to keep the section north of Russell Street as Campbell Avenue, while having the southern part as McGaw Drive.
Leggett says there are already streets in town that are split in a smilar way.
He says the numbering system is the same, no matter what the name of a street is.
Leggett, who also serves as a firefighter, says he doesn’t believe responding to calls in the neighbourhood would be difficult just because of the different streets names.
Mayor Larry Kraemer says he wants a solution that displeases the least amount of people.
Kincardine Council will revisit the street name question on February 18th.
