Canada will defend workers and impose retaliatory tariffs in a balanced way dollar-for-dollar
For each dollar of tariffs the US imposes on raw aluminium imports, Canada will impose an equivalent duty on American goods.
Canadian aluminium presents no threat to the national security of the US, says Canada’s Deputy PM Chrystia Freeland – on the contrary, she says it’s important to the US defence industry.
Today Freeland says she regrets that Canada is once again dealing with a trade action via the US.
US President Donald Trump has signed a proclamation that will put back in place the 10 per cent tariffs on raw aluminium imports from Canada.
“A trade dispute is the last thing anyone needs – it will only hurt the economic recovery on both sides of the border,” said Freeland.
Consultations with Canadian businesses about aluminium products will start and the retaliation will begin after that in about 30 days.
Freeland adds that the tariffs are “useless, unwarranted and unjustified” and harms US residents.
Freeland says any American who buys a can of beer or soda or a car and a bike will suffer.
Canada will always stand strong and defend our aluminum workers and our aluminum industry. Read my statement: https://t.co/3h33oGwKNI #TeamCanada
