Canada is vowing retaliation, after U.S. President Donald Trump says he is re-imposing tariffs on Canadian aluminum.
Trump says he signed a proclamation yesterday that will put back in place the 10 per cent tariffs on raw aluminum imports from Canada.
He says quote-“Canada was taking advantage of us, as usual.”
A subset of American metals companies have complained that Canadian aluminum has recently been dumped on the U.S. market.
However, Canadian aluminum-makers have said it is only being store there, after a reduced demand and production switch due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Prime minister Justin Trudeau says, “In response to the American tariffs announced today, Canada will impose countermeasures that will include dollar-for-dollar retaliatory tariffs. We will always stand up for our aluminum workers. We did so in 2018 and we will stand up for them again now.”
Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland has also released a statement. To read it, please click here.
