Ontario will build new long-term care (LTC) homes at a quickened pace.
Premier Doug Ford says there are 728 projects already in the pipeline with 640 new long-term care beds being created by 2021.
It all starts in Mississauga where two new LTC homes will be built in a matter of months, not years.
“It’s no secret that the system is in desperate need,” says Ford. “We need thousands of long term care beds. we need to upgrade our existing homes and build new ones in growing communities across the province.”
The Mississauga beds are in addition to 8,000 new beds announced last week through the province’s modernized funding model.
Close to 78,000 Ontario residents currently live in 626 long-term care homes. More than 38,000 are on waitlists.
Ontario is investing $1.75 billion to make it all happen over the next 5 years.
For far too long, our long-term care sector has been neglected. We promised to take action and today we did.
In partnership with @THP_hospital and @InfraOntario we will build 640 new long-term care beds in the #Mississauga region as early as 2021. https://t.co/cd7oFvqYcN pic.twitter.com/7zp1M2LBke
